Not all of us are fortunate enough to live near a surf break/beach. and therefore we travel to be able to explore these destinations. Other people go on strike missions, to hunt down the perfect swells. When we travel to new places, exploring new territories, and surf sports, there are a few things we need to keep in mind.

Do Your Research

Before going on a surf trip, the first and most important step is to do your research on the destination and its surf spots.

You would want to know, the best season for surfing there, so you can observe forecasts and time your trip with a good swell.

Next up you need to be sure, that your accommodation is located near the best surf spots, or that you have transportation sorted out.

You should also do your research on where to rent gear or what surf school to join, in case you want to take classes.

Study The Surf Spots

When arriving at the destination, it’s very important to study the surf breaks, before taking on your first session. You need to know where the waves are breaking, to position yourself right in the lineup. You also need to know if there are any rocks of shallow reefs to be careful around. Just like you should know where rip currents are present.

Sit at the beach for an hour, try to find a high spot with a good overview, study the locals and their approach to the waves. Preferably get to speak with a local with knowledge about the surf spot, before you go out.

Respect The Locals

Every surf spot and destination got its vibe. Some places tend to be more localized, while others are more touristy. Either way, you need to respect the locals and their “hierarchy”. Observe their approach and be positive, respectful, and unselfish in your wave selection. Most importantly, make sure not to drop in on anyone!
